Landscape Cave Vessel with Wire

£120.00

I enjoy taking various elements from the coastal landscape to create interesting textures in my work and I like to use my findings in an abstract way.

The glaze on the outside is inspired by brain coral and polyps and the inside of the vessel has a rough black glaze, representing the black craggy rocks.

In this Cave Vessel I have inserted a piece of wire and I have intentionally created these splits and fissures by forcing the metal into the clay. On my coastal walks I encounter many pieces of metal poking out of the rocks.

Over time rock formations change, natural erosion and fissures are created by the elements and it’s these observations that grab my attention.

The hole I have cut out in this vessel is inspired by dark black caves, which I find inviting, almost calling you to enter to explore the dark craggy cavern.

I start making these vessels with a mould and I then coil the rest by hand, until the desired height. I enjoy coiling as it allows a deeper connection with the clay and as I lay each coil, one by one, the piece slowly starts to take shape. This is very much a visceral approach and decisions are made during the making process, such as whether a hole or not should be created.

This piece is a standalone art piece and not for functional use.

Measurements approx (H14cm x W12.5cm)

Care instructions: Please take care when handling this product. The blisters can occasionally burst, this is the effect of the glaze. If this happens, all it needs is a little light sanding by hand to remove any sharp edges. The glaze on the outside is inspired by brain coral and polyps and the inside of the vessel has a rough black glaze, representing black craggy rocks.
